What are the diaries of Lewis and Clark have in common with the Bible? Simply this, while most are familiar with them and think they know of content, few people have read. So it may come as a surprise that the story of Lewis and Clark is not as complete as most believe.

As Lewis and Clark I and many others keep a diary every day. I wrote in mine yesterday. The funny thing is the date of my last entry before yesterday is from May 2005, the first birthday my younger son. And that's the reality. My diary is not as up to date. My guess is yours either. But then we can be forgiven. We write for our own enjoyment. We have not been commissioned by the U.S. government and its president to do so. We are in the midst of a military-sponsored expedition into enemy territory. And we're certainly not in the middle of an adventure the likes of which mankind had never seen nor ever shall be.

The same can not be said of Lewis and Clark, however.

And But the fact is that your journal entries, which we all witnessed during the last two years were apparently recorded at a frequency much lower than the daily-Lewis, in particular. During the three years of issuance in September 1803-September 1806, the following is a sampling of the more significant differences in Lewis registration: 19 September-11 November 1803; may 14to, 1804-abril 7, 1805; agosto 26to, 1805 to January 1, 1806, and from August 12 to late September 1806.

"There is no explanation for differences, "wrote Stephen E. Ambrose, in his best-seller, Courage undaunted. Still, most experts, including the late Ambrose, in general, Lewis & Clark pose registration to be complete. If pressed, however, these same experts are prepared to declare that there never were journal entries written during these gaps. This reluctance to do so, obviously poses an explanation as to what then could have happened to these lost records. As a result, there are almost as many theories as there are experts.

One popular theory is that the missing entries were simply lost on the road during the expedition. Indeed, a likely scenario as Lewis and Clark were lucky to come back in one piece, not to mention their journals. In fact, this theory would be quite satisfactory if not by the absolute absence of any letter or correspondence from any party involved mourn the loss of such records. Then there is the issue of internal tests. Entries that have not indicate holes. They read as if they are complete. All this leads specialists then indicate that Lewis simply not writing for long periods of time, or because they suffer from writer's block or otherwise kept writing because life happens on the way to the Pacific. This line of reasoning may explain why you and I do not write in our journals, but nothing is known about Lewis portrays him to be anything like you and I. History, indeed, the profiles of Lewis as a man that would have anything except one thing, are on their way to increase their commission by Jefferson. And that one thing would have been death itself.

Speaking of which, the other theory that rings true for many experts is that Lewis did not write due to severe bouts of depression. This theory is widely accepted by the three support points. First, is the long time, even near the prevention of the publication of his journals of Lewis on his return. The evidence suggests that stalled the process of leave an emotional lethargy. Secondly, it is believed that his family has suffered from depression that goes back several generations. And third, is his death. Suicide to be specific, induced by severe melancholy, or so say the textbooks. On the surface this theory also seems to close the question, except that the story also clearly demonstrates that if there ever was a time in life when Lewis was free of depression was during that infamous body. Discovery.

So what we created gaps in their records in the magazine? Lewis made even write during that time? He certainly did. The differences in time are too long to reasonably assume he did not. The issue seems to have no answer. And if in a daily log of time, indeed, exist for these gaps, then it also seems that unless it is found a piece of Lewis & Clark's legacy is lost forever.

And that may be the most valuable lesson of these two legendary explorers can teach us. The History is not absolute, is fluid. Supposed truth of today will be false by the discovery of tomorrow. The Bible, for example, is understood differently today due to the discovery the Dead Sea Scrolls and other documents than yesterday. And the same, but tomorrow may reveal new Lewis & Clark journals, finally, fill the gaps in his legacy. It is you and I and most everyone else know the difference.

Still have not read his "incomplete" magazines. And our excuse is they were too busy not reading the Bible and not written in our own journals, but rather will we have been waiting patiently for the story to end The re-release of Lewis and Clark journals in an abridged edition.
